Spotify tells investors it is engineering to be 'the service AI agents choose'
Co-CEO Gustav Söderström used Spotify's Q3 earnings call to recast AI assistants as a distribution channel — a framing with sharp implications for any consumer business trying to stay visible to agent-mediated demand.
On Spotify’s October 22 earnings call, Co-CEO Gustav Söderström told investors the company is building to be “the media service that you use from any agent.” The market agreed: shares closed up 11.19% at $583.66, even though, per Benzinga, Spotify missed Wall Street’s revenue and earnings estimates and subscriber growth carried the day.
The business behind the framing is substantial: 788 million monthly active users, 306 million paying subscribers, roughly €5 billion (about $5.6 billion) in Q3 revenue. Spotify was the first music service to integrate with Meta’s Muse, and now plugs into ChatGPT, Claude, OpenAI’s Dots, and Meta’s Ray-Ban smart glasses. “Spotify is in one of the few categories that actually stands to thrive in the agentic age,” Söderström said, promising to be “simply everywhere.” His pitch to investors: “while other companies are maybe trying to figure out what to do and many are leaning out, we are actually leaning in.” His read on the asymmetry: “Nobody asks an agent to ‘summarize a song’ for them.”
The data under that bet is moving fast. First Page Sage, surveying 4,936 U.S. shoppers across 43 brands and 18,400 shopping prompts in October 2026, found 61.4% of online shoppers now use AI to research purchases, though only 6.8% have let an agent complete a checkout. Agent-completed orders rose from 0.27% of U.S. ecommerce in Q2 to 0.68% in Q3, the largest quarterly jump in the firm’s dataset. 71% of that increase traces to Meta Muse, which launched September 8 and routes through Stripe Link, Shop Pay, and PayPal. Merchants inside an agent’s checkout partnership completed purchases at 1.4 to 3.8 times the rate of outsiders. Muse’s retail partners (Walmart, Gap, Sephora, Wayfair, Best Buy) saw the 3.8x lift; Muse-Shopify stores saw 3.4x. Amazon has blocked Muse entirely.
The structural read: agents are becoming a routing layer, and routing layers reward presence. Spotify sees it clearly because music is a native agent query. Groceries clear 11.9%, event tickets 10.7%, beauty 8.8%. Muse already does 29.7% of agent purchases on under 7% of sessions, at a $118 average order. Meanwhile, eight in ten small businesses are effectively invisible to AI buyers. Google’s Universal Commerce Protocol (January 2026, co-developed with Shopify, Etsy, Wayfair, Target, and Walmart) and OpenAI’s Agentic Commerce Protocol feeds (Nordstrom, Lowe’s, Home Depot, Sephora, Target) are the ambient infrastructure for who gets recommended and who doesn’t. Söderström’s framing isn’t visionary. It’s the first consumer CEO saying the quiet distribution math out loud.
