Muse Tops the App Store, and Small B2C Storefronts Are Now Facing an Agent-Mediated Buyer
Meta's Muse hit No. 1 on the US App Store ten days after launch, displacing ChatGPT. For small restaurants, retailers, and service operators, the question is whether their listings, prices, and booking flows are legible to the agent placing the order.
Meta’s Muse became the No. 1 free app on the US iPhone App Store on September 18, displacing ChatGPT ten days after its September 8 launch and leading Gemini, Claude, and Instagram on the same chart. Axios framed the app not as another chatbot but as an agent built to shop, haggle, cancel subscriptions, and run errands. That framing is the story. Muse doesn’t answer the question, it places the order.
The download base underneath the ranking is thin. Sensor Tower, cited by TechCrunch, put US iOS installs at roughly 83,000, against 108,000 for Meta AI’s debut and 4.3 million for Threads on launch day. On Android, Muse sits at No. 338 in Google Play’s Productivity category. Markets still liked it: Meta shares rose about 0.6% to $657.65 the morning the chart move landed, and JPMorgan moved Meta from Neutral to Overweight, lifting its target from $640 to $820.
Chief AI officer Alexandr Wang has been surfacing user accounts to sell the behavior, including Muse replacing a car-insurance policy with equivalent coverage in roughly five minutes for $3,500 less per year, catching a fraudulent Adobe charge Chase missed, and canceling American Airlines tickets for a full refund. Under the hood, each session runs inside an isolated Linux VM called Muse Secure VM, with an approval layer called Sentinel gating outbound actions so the agent never sees passwords or payment details directly. A Mac app shipped September 17 that reaches into files, calendar, notes, and messages and keeps working after the window is closed. Pricing runs from a free tier at 100 million tokens per week to Power at $20/month and Maximum at $100/month.
For a small B2C operator, the practical question isn’t which agent wins. It’s whether your Instagram business profile, your OpenTable page, your prices, and your booking flow are legible to the software now doing the choosing. Meta is already turning WhatsApp and Instagram into AI sales desks for 200 million small businesses; the IAB now calls reaching AI-mediated buyers marketers’ top challenge; Cloudflare’s AI-crawler default flip has already reshaped what agents can see.
The channel didn’t announce itself. It topped the chart.
