Meta's Muse takes No. 1 on the US App Store, and B2C storefronts inherit a new discovery layer
One week after launch, Meta's action-oriented agent has passed ChatGPT on Apple's free chart — executing purchases and bookings for consumers, and pushing small B2C operators to rethink how they get found.
Meta’s Muse reached No. 1 on Apple’s US free-apps chart on September 18, one week after launch, with Meta Chief AI Officer Alexandr Wang confirming the ranking on X the same day (per Blockonomi; 9to5Mac also reported the top spot). ChatGPT sits at No. 2, Google Gemini at No. 8, Claude at No. 13, Grok at No. 32, and Microsoft Copilot at No. 64. On September 10, TechCrunch had Muse at No. 2 already, citing Sensor Tower figures of roughly 83,000 US iOS installs over about two days, modest by the standards of a launch like Threads, which pulled 4.3 million on day one. The chart position is a ranking-mechanics story more than a mass-download one.
The product itself is the point. Muse is being positioned not as a chatbot but as an action-oriented agent that sends emails, books travel, fills forms, executes purchases, and locates services like pet care, with integrations into Spotify, Instagram, OpenTable, and users’ calendars and email (Blockonomi). NewsBytesApp reports one user, Joe Devoy, uploaded an auto-insurance policy and asked Muse to find identical coverage cheaper; another had the agent track down a green puffer jacket and apply live discount codes to buy it at the lowest available price.
That’s the shift small B2C operators need to sit with. When an agent decides which restaurant to book, which jacket to buy, and whether a promo code actually clears at checkout, the storefront that isn’t structured to be parsed and transacted is bypassed silently. There’s no bounce metric for a purchase you were never considered for.
Meta’s monetization posture is telling. A payment card is required even for the free tier’s 100 million weekly tokens; paid plans run $20 and $100 a month, and Meta hasn’t disclosed second-session or paid-conversion figures (Startup Fortune). The company is optimizing for identified, transacting users from day one.
Read alongside Meta’s rollout of AI sales agents across WhatsApp and Instagram and the IAB’s finding that reaching AI-mediated buyers is now marketers’ top challenge, the trajectory is legible. Discovery is being intermediated by agents on both sides of the transaction, and the businesses that get surfaced will be the ones whose product data, availability, and pricing signals were built for a reader that isn’t human.
