Meta, Sierra, and Walmart Publish Personal Agent Protocol — Small Sellers Have Weeks to Become Agent-Readable
An open OAuth-based standard co-announced October 6 by Meta, Sierra, Shopify, Stripe, Walmart, and others defines how personal AI agents authenticate with businesses and complete tasks — and owner-operated storefronts that ignore it risk being bypassed before BFCM.
Sierra, Meta, Shopify, Stripe, Walmart, Genesys, Instinct, and Rocket co-announced the Personal Agent Protocol on October 6, an open OAuth-based standard governing how personal AI agents authenticate with businesses and complete tasks on behalf of their users. The v0.1 specification and a reference implementation are scheduled to publish later this month. Taylor and Bavor framed it as foundational rails. In practice it’s a discovery layer, and the window to become legible to it’s weeks, not quarters.
The protocol defines three routes a business can expose to agents: its regular website, its APIs (via MCP or OpenAPI), or its own company agent. Shopify’s Mani Fazeli said the standard is meant to cover everything from “product questions to purchases, returns, and exchanges.” Meta’s framing is sharper: “Turning away a personal agent means turning away the customer behind it.”
That line isn’t abstract. Meta’s Muse agent, which hit #1 on the US App Store within days of its September 8 launch, now has what David Singleton told CNBC is “millions of users in the U.S.” and is “growing rapidly.” TechCrunch reports Walmart shoppers are already failing human-verification checks that boot the agent, and sometimes the shopper, out of checkout. Amazon, per Retail Dive, asked Meta to remove its site from Muse entirely. One retailer wants out. One can’t get its own customers in.
The infrastructure story compounds. Cloudflare flipped its AI crawler default on September 15, meaning some ad-bearing pages now block agents by default. For a founder-run storefront running stock anti-bot settings, invisibility is already the condition, not the risk.
OpenAI and Anthropic aren’t signatories yet, though Taylor told CNBC he expects them to join. Meanwhile Instinct’s quadrupled valuation to $10B tells its own story about where capital thinks the consumer surface is moving.
Every prior platform standard, from app store review to Open Graph tags, eventually sorted merchants into the discoverable and the skipped. This one is sorting faster, and the first sort happens before BFCM.
