Google unveils universal Gemini agent for work, with retail edition on the roadmap
At Gemini at Work 2026, Google introduced a single agent that takes objectives instead of instructions, runs inside Gmail, Docs, and Calendar, and will add a retail-specific version alongside financial services and legal previews.
Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian opened Gemini at Work 2026 on October 8 by collapsing the company’s sprawling enterprise AI lineup into a single product: a universal Gemini agent that accepts objectives rather than instructions, lives inside Gmail, Docs, Slides, Sheets, Chat, and Calendar, and routes through a “tasks inbox” where humans approve what the “coworker agent” has prepared.
The staging matters. For two years Google has shipped overlapping assistants, copilots, and model variants into Workspace, leaving customers to figure out which surface did what. One agent, one inbox, one objective-driven interface is a product decision aimed as much at narrative coherence as at engineering.
The scale claims are built to reassure the Fortune 100 buyer. Kurian said nearly 90% of the Fortune 100 now use Gemini Enterprise, roughly 80% of Google Cloud customers use its AI products, and nearly 500 customers each processed more than a trillion tokens over the past year. Sundar Pichai added that Gemini has crossed one billion monthly active users. PayPal routes 10 million multi-model requests weekly. BNP Paribas has rolled an internal assistant to more than 65,000 employees. SOMPO’s 34,000 staff have built over 10,000 custom agents. Orange Spain has deployed more than 1,000.
The vertical editions are where the strategy gets legible. A financial services edition with more than 50 foundational skills is in preview with global financial institutions including CME Group and Deutsche Bank, and draws on data from FactSet, LSEG, S&P Global, and SEC filings. A legal edition is also previewing. A retail edition is on the roadmap, with Shopify, Wesfarmers, Bunnings, Kmart, and Officeworks already testing. Bunnings cites half a million administrative hours saved; Kmart and Officeworks report shopping-agent conversion up to three times higher.
The agent speaks Model Context Protocol, reaches into BigQuery, Postgres, Jira, Confluence, Git, ServiceNow, Salesforce, Atlassian, Databricks, Snowflake, Slack, and, pointedly, Microsoft 365. Anthropic’s Claude is available alongside Google’s own models. Bloomberg Media reported a 63% lift in SQL query accuracy grounding agents in Google’s Knowledge Catalog.
Workspace Business plans get broader access next. That’s the quiet line in the keynote.
