Photon's $4.5M seed bets small-business agents belong in iMessage, not the App Store
The messaging-infrastructure startup, backed by Gradient, A*, and Vercel, is selling developers a way to reach customers through threads they already have open.
Photon closed a $4.5 million seed on October 1, co-led by Gradient and A*, with Vercel, HongShan, Z Fellows, Llama Ventures, and Karman also on the cap table. The San Francisco startup, run by co-founders Daniel Tian (CEO, a UPenn M&T dropout) and Ryan Zhu (CTO, formerly a visiting student at MIT Media Lab), sells developers infrastructure to deploy AI agents inside iMessage, WhatsApp, Telegram, and SMS. Two weeks before the raise, on September 17, the team staged a mock funeral for mobile apps with panelists from Stripe and OpenAI.
The theatrics are doing analytical work. Over a billion users are already reachable through iMessage and RCS, and the install-permission-signup funnel that the App Store has monetized since 2008 is precisely the friction Photon is pitching against. For a small business trying to start a first conversation with a buyer, a thread the buyer checks forty times a day beats a shelf slot they’ll never win.
The traction numbers are uneven in a telling way. More than 40,000 developers have signed up and the platform claims millions of end users across its hosted and open-source footprint, but only about 50 are paying, a conversion rate hovering near 0.1%. Revenue grew tenfold between May and August. Messaging volume rose fivefold in the preceding month. Churn sits below 3%. Open source accounts for 98% of volume; the hosted service, launched in April, reports 99.95% uptime, up from the 99.9% figure in Photon’s April 21st Spectrum announcement.
The ecosystem map is what the seed is really buying. Nous Research’s Hermes agent runs on Photon by default inside iMessage. Tencent’s QClaw and NanoClaw use it. Corgi Insurance, Boardy, Ditto, Rho, Fliptexts, and Slashy are sourced customers. A mini-app API shipped in June, gated to iOS 26.
The counterparty risk is Apple and Meta, which own the pipes. Gradient’s Vig Sachidananda and A* co-founder Kevin Hartz, the Eventbrite veteran whose firm closed a $450 million third fund in May, are betting that platform tolerance holds long enough for distribution economics to reprice. Linq raised a $20 million Series A in February, Poke took $15 million, Jelou $10 million, Wassist $1.1 million, and Bird layered on $450 million in debt. The funeral was for apps. The wake is for anyone whose customer-acquisition model still assumes a download.
