Klaviyo opens 260 MCP tools to outside AI agents, letting Claude and ChatGPT run email and SMS campaigns
At its K:BOS conference on September 9, Klaviyo made its B2C CRM headless — an external agent can now read data, build segments, and push a campaign live without anyone opening the Klaviyo interface.
At its K:BOS conference on September 9, Klaviyo exposed more than 260 Model Context Protocol tools and over 490 APIs to Claude, ChatGPT, and any other AI system that speaks MCP. The Business Wire announcement, headlined “Klaviyo Goes Headless,” reframes what has been a UI-first B2C CRM as an interface-optional data layer that outside agents can read, segment, and act against.
The scale being made addressable isn’t small. Klaviyo says its platform processes more than four billion signals a day across more than 205,000 paying customers. Alongside the MCP tools, the company previewed SQL access inside Klaviyo Data Platform through a feature called Composer, which translates a plain-language question into a SQL query and returns both the answer and the query it ran. The preview reaches profiles, events, segments, lists, and catalogs.
Thomas Randall of Info-Tech Research Group read the release as a category shift: from software that helps marketers complete tasks toward a platform where an AI can interpret a goal, analyze data, and execute. That’s a different product being sold to a different buyer, even when the logo doesn’t change.
The governance implications are the part worth sitting with. The Agile Brand Guide notes that when an agent reaches the platform through MCP or a raw API, the send limits and approval steps that normally live in Klaviyo’s screens are no longer in the path. What governs the agent is the scope attached to its credential. Randall points out that MCP documentation supports both read and write tools, that read-only mode is optional, and that a setting exists to disable tools exposing user-generated content because such content could carry prompt-injection payloads.
Read that sequence in order. Write is default. Read-only is opt-in. UGC-exposing tools are enabled unless you turn them off. The practical hardening posture is straightforward: default agent tokens to read-only, scope which objects they can touch, and require human confirmation before anything sends.
Headless CRM isn’t new packaging. It’s a different accountability model shipped as an API surface.
