Anthropic ships open commerce-agent blueprint, cites 30–35% larger carts at one partner
A free GitHub repository and Claude Code plugin let e-commerce teams stand up a shopping or merchant agent in days, with Anthropic's product lead citing early results from one unnamed partner ahead of the holiday season.
Anthropic on Wednesday published an open-source blueprint for building commerce agents on Claude, releasing a GitHub repository and a Claude Code plugin timed almost exactly to the window when merchants finalize holiday tooling. The repo (github.com/anthropics/commerce-agents, Apache 2.0) ships two reference agents, a shopping agent that searches a catalog and assembles a checkout-ready cart in conversation, and a merchant agent that drafts inventory alerts and localized campaigns but stages every write until a human approves it.
Angela Jiang, Anthropic’s head of product on the Claude platform, told Reuters: “We’ve seen encouraging results — cart size up about 30–35% for one partner, and customers [are] about 60% more likely to complete a purchase.” The partner is unnamed. The sample size is one. The number is loud anyway, because it lands against a benchmark Anthropic is happy to cite: Adobe Analytics data, also via Reuters, showing AI-driven retail visits already convert at a 60% higher rate than other traffic.
The engineering surface is deliberately promiscuous. Code runs on the Claude Messages API, the Claude Agent SDK, or Claude Managed Agents, and deploys on Amazon Bedrock, Microsoft Foundry, or Google Cloud Vertex AI. Four verticals ship on day one: retail, travel, telecom, entertainment. The README notes the repository is a reference implementation and isn’t accepting contributions.
Wix’s Dror Zalika is quoted in the announcement saying his engineers “had a working commerce agent taking prompts within fifteen minutes.” Anthropic’s blog says days for a full deployment.
The competitive read is the interesting part. This lands the same week Klaviyo is folding an agency’s agent team into its own platform and Salesforce’s Winter ’27 release adds a commerce conversion agent and a marketing-goals agent. Those are SKUs. Anthropic isn’t selling a SKU; it’s seeding a fork. The model provider is teaching merchants to build the agent themselves, on infrastructure the merchant already pays for, in the eight weeks before Black Friday. Whoever owns the reference implementation shapes what “a commerce agent” means to everyone downstream.
