Anthropic puts an always-on Claude inside Slack with Claude Tag
The new agent replaces the existing Claude-in-Slack app, runs on Opus 4.8, and adds an ambient mode that can jump into channels unprompted — available in beta today for Enterprise and Team customers.
Anthropic launched Claude Tag on Tuesday, an always-on Slack agent that replaces the older Claude-in-Slack app and, in opt-in ambient mode, can “proactively jump into the chat of its own accord.” Summoned by @-mention or running in the background, it breaks a request into stages, works through them with whatever tools the administrator has granted, and posts the results back into the thread. Anthropic says it can schedule its own work and is built for “pursuing a project autonomously over hours or days.”
The configuration story is where the product actually lives. Tool access, data access, and memory are scoped per channel, producing what Anthropic calls “separate Claude identities for different uses.” Admins can cap token spend by channel and across the org. Direct messages route to a private response using each user’s personal connectors. Channel-level memory accrues as Claude sits in the room, with read access elsewhere on request. Enterprise and Team customers get an introductory launch credit and a 30-day window to migrate.
Slack GM Rob Seaman framed the launch in cultural terms: “making AI multiplayer. Instead of a private back-and-forth, Claude Tag shows up in the open.” Ambient mode, per TechCrunch, can flag cross-org updates, surface forgotten threads, and chase stalled tasks. The agent isn’t waiting to be addressed; it’s reading the room.
The most revealing detail comes from Cat Wu, Anthropic’s head of product for Claude Code and Cowork, who told Bloomberg that Opus 4.8 is a stopgap and that “Fable is the best model to use this product with.” Anthropic disabled access to Fable 5 earlier this month under a Trump administration order restricting foreign-national access. The company is shipping a flagship agentic product on a model it considers second-best, because the model it prefers is sitting behind an export-control wall.
Wu also disclosed that 65% of the Anthropic product team’s code is now generated by an internal version of Claude Tag. That number is the pitch, delivered as a fait accompli the month Anthropic confidentially filed for an IPO at a $965 billion valuation. Other platforms, the company says, follow in the coming weeks. The agent inside the chat window has become the product Anthropic wants public-market investors to price.
